Mauldin Wins 22nd Hall of Fame Classic
in Belton October 4 - 5, 2008

2008 Hall of Fame Classic - Group PhotoMauldin won individual championships at #1 and #3 singles and captured the Hall of Fame Classic team championships with 28 points. Mauldin lost in the finals of both doubles flights, but had already earned enough team points to clinch the title. The tournament was one of the closest ever; J.L. Mann, who won 3 individual championships, was only 2 points behind with 26 and Lextington another point back with 25. Team standings were:

Belton Kids Team Tennis

Belton Kids Team Tennis PhotoThe Belton Tennis Association ended a 4-week session of Kids Team Tennis Wednesday evening, August 20. 37 children participated in the program which featured matches for older kids and instruction for younger ones. The new Quick Start equipment was used, which includes smaller racquets, foam balls, shorter nets and smaller courts appropriate for smaller children. The final session featured pizza and drinks after the tennis.

The 16 older children ages 6 to 10 were divided into four teams. Each team played four matches. The Blue Team, captained by Hal McDowell, finished with the best record....3 wins and 1 loss. The other teams included the Yellow Team captained by Dion Jones, the Green Team captained by Beth Cobb and the Red Team captained by Tonya Locke.

The 21 younger children 4 to 6 were divided into two groups and provided basic instruction. The instructors included Jonathan Rice, Rex Maynard and Steve Zalinski, the Tennis Service Representative for South Carolina. Every player received a Kids Team Tennis t-shirt and a membership into the United States Tennis Association.

Wachovia Palmetto Championship
in Belton June 3-9, 2008

Champions, finalists & sportsmanship award winnersThe Wachovia Palmetto Championships finished a hot week with championship matches and an awards ceremony at the Belton Tennis Center on June 9. This concluded seven days of tennis played on over 65 courts in Belton and Anderson. The tournament ran on schedule throughout the week, with no rain delays. Entries were down to 425 Click for larger viewplayers this year due to a conflict with schools throughout the state. A large number of juniors in the 18's were unable to play this year's tournament due to conflicts with their high school graduations. Singles and doubles championships were decided for both boys and girls in five age divisions (10's, 12's, 14's, 16's and 18's). Six additional Belton Classic singles champions were determined. The Belton Classic is a separate Level III South Carolina tournament consisting of players who do not advance through the qualifying into the main draw.
